The Furness area of the Lake District has been famous
for its charcoal for hundreds of years; most of it was used to
smelt the highest quality iron and steel for use in industry
throughout the world.
Nowadays 80 to 90 % of charcoal used in
the UK is
imported from the third world.
Brazil and parts of Africa
supply a large part of this, even though the populations of these
countries could put this fuel to better use than we do.
Shipping charcoal is a risky business,
most imported charcoal will have been doused with water at least
once.

The
unique and beautiful Lakeland landscape owes much of its charm
and distinction to the many broad-leaved woodlands. These still
exist today because they were once cropped to provide the raw
material for charcoal production.
